Google to Combat Music Piracy in India

According to a Wall Street Journal article, Google plans to launch a music service meant to combat piracy by making readers search for legal streaming music and downloads. The service is claimed to be implemented in a short span of the next few days.

For this purpose, Google has tied up with three music labels from varying backgrounds (Saregama India Ltd., New York based Saavn, and web portal In.com) with an access to large Bollywood music database. The music service shouldn't be confused with the likes of iTunes because it's a feature incorporated in Google's search bar. When Indians search for music in Google's search engine, the top results will be from the aforementioned partner labels. The report also said that clicking on a link (search result) will launch a pop-up music player where the requested content will be streamed for free.

The success of this feature is open to conjecture, because people who seek latest tracks for free, which will definitely be beyond the database of Google's partners, will always skip the first few pages or use another search engine for what they seek.

Google's Tips for Safe Online Web Browsing and Security Of Your Online Data : A Guide

Google suggests some tips on improve your online security and for safe online while browsing and help to protecting your data. Like many people, you probably store a lot of important information in your Google Account. I also check my Gmail account several times a day and rely on having access to my mail and contacts wherever I go. With Google Account we also have access to lots of other services like videos, photos, documents, blogs, calendars, and more.

A Google Account is also valuable in the eyes of spammers and other people looking to do harm. It’s not so much about your specific account, but rather the fact that your friends and family see your Google Account as trustworthy. A phishing scam that aims to trick your contacts into wiring money — ostensibly to help you out. If your account is compromised and used to send these messages, your well-meaning friends may find themselves out a chunk of change. If you have sensitive information in your account, it may also be at risk of improper access. As part of National Cyber security Awareness month, Google want to let you know what you can do to better protect your Google Account.

Stay one step ahead of the bad guys:
Account hijackers prey on the bad habits of the average Internet user. Understanding common hijacking techniques and using better security practices will help you stay one step ahead of them. The most common ways hijackers can get access to your Google password are:
Password re-use: You sign up for an account on a third-party site with your Google username and password. If that site is hacked and your sign-in information is discovered, the hijacker has easy access to your Google Account.
Malware: You use a computer with infected software that is designed to steal your passwords as you type (“keylogging”) or grab them from your browser’s cache data.
Phishing: You respond to a website, email, or phone call that claims to come from a legitimate organization and asks for your username and password.
Brute force: You use a password that’s easy to guess, like your first or last name plus your birth date (“Laura1968”), or you provide an answer to a secret question that’s common and therefore easy to guess, like “pizza” for “What is your favorite food?”

As you can see, hijackers have many tactics for stealing your password, and it’s important to be aware of all of them.

Take control of your account security across the web:
Online accounts that share passwords are like a line of dominoes: When one falls, it doesn’t take much for the others to fall, too. This is why you should choose unique passwords for important accounts like Gmail (your Google Account), your bank, commerce sites, and social networking sites. Google also working on technology that adds another layer of protection beyond your password to make your Google Account significantly more secure.

Choosing a unique password is not enough to secure your Google Account against every possible threat. That’s why Google created an easy-to-use checklist to help you secure your computer, browser, Gmail, and Google Account. We encourage you to go through the entire checklist, but want to highlight these tips:

~Never re-use passwords for your important accounts like online banking, email, social networking, and commerce.
~Change your password periodically, and be sure to do so for important accounts whenever you suspect one of them may have been at risk. Don’t just change your password by a few letters or numbers (“Aquarius5” to “Aquarius6”); change the combination of letters and numbers to something unique each time.
~Never respond to messages, non-Google websites, or phone calls asking for your Google username or password; a legitimate organization will not ask you for this type of information. Report these messages to Google so they can take action. If you responded and can no longer access your account, visit our account recovery page.
We hope you’ll take action to ensure your security across the web, not just on Google. Run regular virus scans, don’t re-use your passwords, and keep your software and account recovery information up to date. These simple yet powerful steps can make a difference when it really counts.

Gmail Security: Gmail Security Checklist by Google

Google now offers a security checklist for Gmail users. Google is advising Gmail users on how to secure their accounts by having them go through a checklist of tasks that involve following basic security principles and verifying Gmail specific options. Its a five-part process with multiple steps in each designed to reclaim the feeling that nobody can get into your inbox. It starts out obvious (security updates, plug-ins, passwords) then gets into trickier tactics.  Google has shown an increased concern over the security of Gmail users after a spying attack has targeted its network earlier this year. The list is split into five parts, each containing several tasks. As the users go through them and check the completed items, they are kept informed about their progress.  Part 1: Your computer: The first part concerns general computer security and instructs people to scan for malware, update their operating system and install updates for third party popular applications, like Adobe Reader, Flash player and Java. Part 2: Your browser: The second part refers to the security of the browser used to access the Gmail account. Google advises users to keep their browsers up to date and to be very careful about add-ons that require their Google Account credentials. Part 3: Your Google Account: The 3rd part, users are asked to change their password twice a year, review the websites that have access to their account from the "My Account > Change authorized websites" menu and also update password recovery options like alternate email, mobile phone or secret question. Part 4: Your Gmail settings: In part four deals with actual Gmail settings. These include enabling the "always use HTTPS" option, as well as checking the "Filters" and the "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" settings to make sure that emails are not being forwarded to other accounts. The company also suggests verifying the "Send Mail As", "Get mail from other accounts", and "Grant access to your account" options, as well as checking the "Last Account Activity" list for suspicious IP addresses. Part 5: Final Reminders: This is last part of the checklist is called "Final Reminders" and contains general advices like not giving out login information to other websites, always logging out after reading email or clearing browser cookies, cache, stored passwords and autocomplete data periodically. The Gmail security checklist can be accessed by clicking on the Help link from the email account and then the checklist one in the left menu or visit directly Gmail Security Checklist.

New Windows Phone 7 OS Tablet Concept Photos

The trend of porting a mobile OS to a tablet isn’t a new one at all. After all, mobile OS are much finger-friendly than the full featured OS that we mainly use on our laptops and desktops.
Here, designer Umang Dokey has taken inspiration from the same approach and made a concept tablet that runs on Windows Phone 7 OS. The Tablet has a 8-inch capacitive touch screen, 2 web cams for 3D video calling, an in-built stand and a keyboard.
Interestingly! other companies like Apple and Google have already begun to make tablet-devices out of their mobile OS, so something like the Windows Phone 7 OS Tablet shouldn’t be far from reality.
And if that’s really the case, I wonder what Microsoft will do about the HP Slate that is supposed to launch later this year? Not to mention the Microsoft Courier too?

Google Android 4.0 Release To Be Called Ice Cream

Google has revealed that Android’s next iterations will be called Gingerbread (3.0) and Honeycomb (3.5), but according to new reports the Android 4.0 will be called Ice Cream. The list of Android releases should be expanded next year with two new versions, including Android Honeycomb and Ice Cream. Gingerbread will arrive later this year as Android 3.0.

Google has a special pattern for naming each Android. company names each release after a dessert, in alphabetical order. This began in May 2009 with the development of the 1.5 version of Android, which Google dubbed Cupcake. Donut (Android 1.6) followed in Sept. 2009 and Éclair (Android 2.0) in Oct. 2009. The current version of Android (Android 2.2) is called Froyo, short for frozen yogurt. It was unveiled in May at Google’s annual developer conference.

Android’s next releases will be called Gingerbread (3.0) and Honeycomb (3.5), but has kept the following name–which, according to the company’s pattern, will start with “I”– secret, and they are expected to be followed by Ice Cream sometime in mid or second half of the next year. According to Forbes, the new name has been already confirmed. ARM President Tudor Brown is the one who confirmed that Android 4.0 would be called Ice Cream, and there are little chances that he would be mistaken, especially since the company's processors are being used in over 95 of all mobile phones out there and over one-quarter of all electronic devices.

Google is salient on the Android 4.0 release, which would be called Ice Cream. Coz this is one of the few desserts that starts with the letter 'I', and fits Google's roadmap. The company might not announce something on Ice Cream until next year, especially since it already has two platform versions on their way to the market, but there are great chances that the name is the correct one.
Samsung also unveiled the existence of Honeycomb before the announcement by Google, and in this case we also hope that ARM's President Tudor Brown should be correct.

Nokia Announced C5-03 Symbian S60v5 Cheap SmartPhone

Nokia has launched the latest C5 device, an inexpensive touchscreen smartphone with a couple of neat features that may well pique your interest if you want a new device that’s simple to use but covers all of the essentials for modern-day phones. It's a Symbian^1 or S60 v5 touch phone with 5MP camera, Wi-Fi and GPS and it's really lightweight - it weighs only 93 grams.

The Nokia C5-03 runs Symbian^1, which is to say Symbian S60 5th edition. Anyway, it has a 3.2" nHD (360x640) resistive touchscreen and it measures 105.8 x 51.0 x 13.8 mm.
The new C5-03 flaunts a 5MP camera (fixed-focus) and comes with a 2GB microSD card in the box. Wi-Fi and GPS are on-board and of course Ovi Maps with free voice-guided navigation. For mobile connectivity, the Nokia C5-03 offers quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and tri-band 3G with HSDPA (10.2Mbps) and HSUPA (2Mbps).

The Nokia C5-03 has a 1000mAh battery, which promises impressive battery life - up to 25 days of standby, 11.5 hours of talk time and up to 35 hours of music playback (19.5 hours if you're using a Bluetooth headset).
The Nokia C5-03 allows for easy email set-up – either an existing webmail or POP3 provider through Nokia messaging. For business users, there’s also the option of Mail for Exchange. If that isn’t enough, you’ll also find a quick setup wizard for Ovi Mail for users either new to email or who want a different account for their mobile messaging. As you’d expect, there’s also access to Ovi Music and the Ovi Store so you can fill your device with fresh content on a daily basis. The two-tone colour scheme comes in both bold and restrained flavours.

The Nokia C5-03 will be available worldwide by the end of the year for around 170 euro (237 USD) before taxes and subsidies. It's odd that Nokia launches another Symbian^1 device, when it has already got Symbian ^3 up and running on three other phones, especially the Nokia C6-01, which is quite close to the C5-03 specs-wise. Also Nokia made complicated its model numbering scheme like this latest Nokia C5-03.

Really Nanosized Ipod For You In India

Suggested Indian Retail Prices of Apple iPod nano:
8GB Model - Rs. 10,700 (Inclusive of VAT)
16GB Model - Rs. 12, 7000 (Inclusive of VAT)
Note that VAT and other taxes may vary for different regions

Apple's nano, a product line that came into existence as a replacement to the iPod Mini has since its introduction in 2005 underwent some really big changes. Currently in its sixth iteration, the Nano might just have underwent its most dramatic transition so far.

That s because Apple has just announced the all new iPod Nano at the 2010 Fall Event. The new Nano gets a 3.3 inch  1.54 inch touch screen display, it's more boxy now (remember the third generation version?) albeit with a much larger display area. Those who loved the longishness of the previous generation Nano along with its camera, well, its time to move on.

With Apple's products shrinking in size with each product refresh, why should the Nano be an exception? The New Nano is a whopping 46% tinier than the (already) tiny fifth generation Nano. The weight too has seen a drastic reduction. If it was featherweight earlier its literally weightless now.

If you were a fan of the click-wheel, be disappointed because that too has been scrapped. The touch-screen now takes up most of the front fascia. There are volume buttons on the side and a clip on at the rear the only hardware buttons on the device. Apple claims that the Nano can play music continuously for 24 hours till it runs out of steam. There would be two variants of the Nano in 8 and 16GB capacities both of which would be available in various color options. FM radio fans don't need to worry as the feature hasn't been given a miss.

In the US, the Nano 8GB will set you back by  $149 while the 16GB version  would sell for  $179. Oh and if you happen to be in the US, you can start buying these today! Lucky Yanks.
